EMPIRICAL STANDARDS

Testing Methodology & Standards

Every review score on this site is generated through real client-work validation, transparent pricing math, and strict data portability testing.

Last revised: February 2026

The Core Evaluation Framework

We do not award scores based on feature bullet points or vendor press releases. We grade every candidate application across five distinct, mathematically weighted dimensions designed specifically for solo operators:

Ease of Use & Onboarding

Weight: 20%

Speed of setup, friction in daily operations, and intuitive mental model for non-enterprise users.

Feature Depth & Power

Weight: 25%

Utility of capabilities without unnecessary enterprise bloat that slows down solo execution.

Value & Pricing Transparency

Weight: 25%

Return on investment for a single seat, clear billing tiers, and fair feature gates.

Reliability & Data Export

Weight: 15%

Uptime track record, offline resilience, and friction-free portable data export.

Freelance & Studio Fit

Weight: 15%

Specific suitability for client collaboration, single-seat economics, and lean overhead.

Empirical Testing Protocol

Before an author can submit a tool review for editorial peer review, the evaluation must satisfy three non-negotiable criteria:

  1. Two-Week Minimum Production Immersion: The tool must be integrated into active client projects or real studio operations for at least 14 continuous business days. Synthetic "toy projects" are not permitted for rating generation.
  2. Full Data Portability & Export Audit: We deliberately test how difficult it is to retrieve your client data if you decide to cancel. Can you export clean JSON, CSV, or Markdown? Or does the vendor lock your work behind proprietary data silos?
  3. True All-In Pricing Verification: We calculate the actual cost including compulsory add-ons, storage tiers, transaction processing surcharges, and annual vs. monthly differentials.

Score Calculation Formula

The overall rating shown on cards and scorecards is a strict weighted average calculated as:

Overall Score = (EaseOfUse × 0.20) + (Features × 0.25) + (Value × 0.25) + (Reliability × 0.15) + (FreelanceFit × 0.15)

Scores above 9.0 are designated Editor's Choice and represent best-in-class software with exceptional solo ergonomics and transparent pricing.
